According to the BC Injury Research and Prevention Unit, over 1 in 3 British Columbia seniors over 65 experience a fall each year, with 85% of injury-related hospitalizations among seniors caused by falls.
The good news is that the vast majority of falls are preventable. By implementing these 8 room-by-room home modifications, you can protect your parents and give your entire family lasting peace of mind.
1. The Bathroom: Your #1 Danger Zone
More than 70% of home fall injuries occur in the bathroom due to slippery tiles and low fixtures:
- Install Professional Grab Bars: Secure grab bars anchored directly into wall studs beside the toilet and inside the shower (never use suction-cup bars).
- Use a Raised Toilet Seat & Shower Chair: Reduces knee strain and prevents dizziness when standing up.
- Non-Slip Adhesive Strips: Apply inside the tub and replace loose bath mats with rubber-backed non-skid rugs.
2. Hallways & Staircases
- Install sturdy handrails on both sides of every staircase.
- Apply high-contrast non-slip tread tape on the edge of each step.
- Ensure illuminated rocker light switches at both top and bottom of stairs.
3. Bedroom & Nighttime Path Lighting
Most nighttime falls happen when seniors wake up disoriented in the dark to use the bathroom. Plug in motion-activated amber LED nightlights along the baseboards from bed to bathroom.
4. Eliminate Floor Clutter & Throw Rugs
Remove all decorative scatter rugs, tuck electrical cords behind furniture, and keep main walking corridors at least 36 inches wide for walkers or canes.
